I remember my dad giving me a hammer, some nails and a couple of ratty old 2x4s in the summer of 1960, telling me to go outside and build something. He was really trying to get rid of me, but in retrospect it was the meager beginnings of a life long career in the construction industry.

In 1971, at the age of 19, I entered the heavy construction industry in upstate New York, working my way as the gopher, learning everything from surveying to operating heavy equipment, with several 90# jack hammers and square point shovels in between. I soon realized that I wanted to be more than a ditch digger, so when I had the opportunity to enroll in an informal carpenter’s apprentice program in the spring of 1972, I jumped at the chance. I spent the next 6 years learning all I could from various journeyman carpenters, electricians, roofers and whom ever else would take the time to teach me.

In 1977 I passed my General Contractor’s License Exam in California and formed Coastwood Development Company, specializing in custom remodels and commercial tenant improvements. I really can’t pin point any time that I haven’t enjoyed my career, In 1986 a custom home I built with a partner was featured on the cover of Fine Home Building Magazine, I ran a Electrical Contracting Business, two Handyman services, a Home Inspection service, two General Contracting Businesses and have had the privilege to work with quality craftsman and clients in seven of the western states.

I am currently an All Structure General Contractor in Oregon State, and you know, after 37 years, I still love my work.
